Whoaaaa.
At some point it’d be fun to dig into all those virtual space programs like the Games for Windows 95 space station! I don’t know that I have any collected thoughts on it right now, but for sure, there’s a lot to explore there about how we expected to interact with computers.
Attention all digital artists!
Krita, an actual FREE digital art program, recently released an Alpha 3.0 version that features tools for creating “hand-drawn animations”.
If you’re looking for an art program with more advanced tools than Paint Tool Sai but don’t want to cough up the cash, then Krita is your program. (However donations to support the people making the program are very much appreciated!)
I understand that when you first download it, the layout and tools can be a little intimidating, but don’t worry. The program comes with a manual and there are tutorials on Youtube that can help you understand the basics.
Even if you don’t want to download this program or donate, please reblog to help spread the word and tag people you think might enjoy this.
Edit: Also, there are different brush packs you can download here. And if you don’t like this program there is also MediBang Paint.
Also, the 3.0 version is out now.
@fini-mun @ikenadibe I know you guys like your Manga Studio but hey, free thing to give a spin?
tumblr artist PSA?
It looks like tumblr now automatically converts png files to jpg - if you have a fairly “clean”/simple digital art style that gets wrecked by jpg artifacts, you’ll want to put transparency somewhere in the image - tumblr will leave pngs with transparency alone (a single pixel border of transparency around the image works and is pretty non-intrusive).
Incidentally twitter has done this for a while, the same method of fixing it works there.
I want the world to understand computers don’t just do things, they only do what the user tells them to do.
“Digital art is cheating! The computer does it!” No, the user painted it.
“Digital music isn’t real! The computer makes it!” No, the user composed it.
“I don’t know what happened. The computer just started acting weird on its own.” NO, YOU’VE BEEN CLICKING ADS AGAIN, MOM.
The Sega Genesis? Yeah, it runs Wolfenstein 3D.
This is a fan port, rewritten in ASM using the Wolf3D source code as a base. You can learn more and download the current build here.
(I’m not dead, btw. More again soon.)
Using the sprites from the gif in the last post, I was able to insert the missing Snakehead frames into the leaked 0.99 Beta of Duke Nukem 3D.
There was slight compression in the gif so you’ll see a slight pink outline on some of the sprites.
And then I got the uncompressed ART tiles.

I’ve never actually owned or tried any of the games by Knowledge Adventure, so that’s a blind spot for me. (For those who haven’t tried them either: Knowledge Adventure put out a series of educational titles that often had Doom-like 3D parts to them. Hence, 3D Dinosaur Adventure and 3D Body Adventure.)
But luckily for you, there’s actually a ton on YouTube for these games. Since Knowledge Adventure games were included with new computers, a whole lot of people have them and have shared videos from them, etc.
The other good news is that they’re actually for sale digitally now! See the page for Zoom Platform, which sells a bundle of their games for $15.
As far as Ecology Treks, I can’t find a copy readily available anywhere, sorry. :(

I love them. They’re fantastic games. Super Mario 3D Land looks kind of boring, but then you hit that second quest where Nintendo finally starts ramping up the difficulty and the game hits its stride. I almost full-cleared Super Mario 3D Land; the only thing I never finished was super secret final level, because it proved too difficult for me.
I finished all of the levels in Super Mario 3D World, but haven’t circled back around to get all of the collectables as of yet. That’s a fantastic game, too, but I was hoping for another 3D Land-style “second quest” where every single level in the entire game had a harder variant, and you don’t get that (you get one extra large world in the post-game that remixes a select handful of levels).
I’ve actually been feeling a hankering to replay Super Mario 3D Land every now and then, but my game card seems to be not long for this world. In the middle of play the 3DS will suddenly pop up and complain that I took the card out. I think one of the pins are bent. Been meaning to buy a new one, but I haven’t gotten around to it.
But, yes: fantastic games. My favorite part is the way they don’t really shelter you. 3D platformers feel like they go out of their way sometimes to protect you from the imprecision of 3D movement. They put up guard rails and implement all of these systems to make sure you can’t accidentally kill yourself, because it’s 3D, and 3D is difficult to maneuver in.
Super Mario 3D Land/World has this… sense of confidence about its level design, I guess? It sort of feels like the training wheels have come off. It’s saying, “Yeah, we can do complex 2D-style platforming 3D.” And it does it effortlessly in a way that it feels like no other 3D platformer has done before.
RIP, guy that made the box art to everyone’s favorite classic video games.
Related: If you know how I can get one of the original prints to one of his Pac-Man works, please let me know in the Ask box. I’d love to try and get one to mount on the wall, but it’s not clear how you order from his website, if you can even order from it anymore at all.
